Types Of Paint Finishes

Beyond color, the finish of the paint that you choose to decorate your house with can have a huge effect on the aesthetic and design of your home. Just like colors, there are a wide variety of different paint finishes available on the market. While they differ in terms of appearance, there are also specific advantages and disadvantages with each type of paint finish. Understanding the differences between the available types of finishes can help you choose the best paint finish for your design needs.

Matte Finish

Matte finishes produce a dulled appearance and won't reflect a lot of light. This makes them ideal for areas that receive a huge amount of natural light, as they won't reflect sunlight and make the room too bright compared to the rest of the house. The dulled finish of matte finish paints also makes them ideal for covering up small bumps and uneven patches that your walls or ceiling may have. However, matte finish paints can be easily scratched when compared to other types of finishes, which makes them less than ideal for areas that may easily become dirty.

Eggshell Finish

Eggshell finish paints will reflect a small amount of light, unlike their matte finish counterparts. This makes them the ideal choice for rooms that do not receive a large amount of light, as they can help brighten up a dark room without producing any glare. Additionally, eggshell finish paints will not show scratches or wear as easily as matte finish paints will, which means they can be used in areas that may easily become dirty or require constant cleaning of your paint. However, eggshell finish paints are not extremely durable, and thus are not the best fit for rooms which may produce a lot of dirt or grime on the walls or ceiling.

Gloss Finish

Gloss finish paints reflect a massive amount of light, much more than eggshell paints will. This gives paints with a gloss finish the appearance of plastic or another synthetic material. This may provide a number of aesthetic problems, as there is no such thing as a subtle gloss paint. However, gloss paint is extremely durable, and can handle many scrubbings and deep cleans without fading or becoming visibly worn at all. This makes them the best choice for countertops, doorways, window frames, and other areas of your home which may experience a lot of general wear and tear or weather exposure, or require consistent deep cleaning.
