How To Pearl Paint Walls

Wall pearl paint can add a shimmer to your bland interior wall and instantly update the look of the room. The pearl paint works best in country, traditional, or Mediterranean style rooms. The texture is applied after painting and priming the surface. It is simple to add the pearl effect to your wood walls or drywall by applying these steps.

Prepare to Apply the Pearl Paint

To paint the pearl effect, gather:

  • work gloves
  • eye goggles
  • drop cloths or plastic
  • painter's tape or masking tape
  • lint-free cloths
  • liquid dish soap
  • mixing stick
  • plastic float trowel
  • paint roller
  • joint compound or wood filler
  • color wash brush
  • paint brush
  • primer interior base coat
  • clear coat
  • pearlescent finish paint

Inspect the wall for scratches or dings, and spread drywall joint compound or wood filler on them feathering the edges. Lightly sand the area after it dries. Paints with a sheen tend to highlight imperfections.

Push furniture to the center of the floor. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and several drops of dish soap. Tape off wall trim, outlets, vents, and door frames, then spread drop cloths or plastic over floors and non-removable items.

Prime the Wall

Raise a window to ventilate the room, or wear a painter's mask. Measure the length and width of the wall, and motility the two numbers for the area to help you buy the right amount of primer and paint.

Mix the primer according to directions, and brush it on the outside edge of the wall to a three-inch perimeter using a paint brush  Pour some primer into a paint tray, and cover your roller generously with it. Roll on the primer working from the bottom up, smoothing runs when the roller is almost out of paint, and let it dry.

Paint and Add Texture

Practice the pearl technique on scrap cardboard. Stir the paint in the same way you did the primer.

Cover a fresh roller with a generous amount of paint, and apply the base coat working in four to eight feet sections to avoid a banded appearance. Smooth edges once the roller or brush is about out of paint. It also helps to keep the edges wet. Stop at here inches before the wall border, and cut in with a paint brush, working in small sections.

Apply the pearl texture to the wall making an overlapping "X;' pattern. After the paint slightly dries, work the float trowel in a swirl motion. If the trowel doesn't stick a little, let the paint dry some more.

Clean the trowel with a clean cloth as you work along the wall. Brush on a clear coat to protect the finish.
